This course is going to focus on one of such factors: regional cooperation and integration. Looking into the European Union (EU), it will not only discuss the policy-making process above the state level, but also examine several important regional policies in Europe. More specifically, the first part of the course will introduce the history of European integration, the institutional and legal structure of the EU, major actors in the EU policy-making process, and the recent trend of multi-level governance and Europeanisation in the EU. The second part of the course will then discuss European public policies in ten different areas: the Single Market, Common Agricultural Policy, Regional Policy, Competition Policy, Economic and Monetary Union, Environmental Policy, Common Commercial Policy, Foreign and Security Policy and Justice and Home Affairs. Students are divided into ten groups at the beginning of the term. Each group is required to do a presentation regarding one of the policy areas covered by the second half of the course. At the end of term, each participant is required to write a term essay on the topics covered by the course. The evaluation is based on class attendance, group presentation and term essay.
