Information about Teaching Jobs in Japan
From the web sites listed below, you can find general information about teaching in Japan as well as specific information on positions available and the kinds of qualifications needed for various types of jobs (language schools, high schools, universities, business, etc.)
- The Teaching in Japan Page --This site has FAQ about visas and qualifications, links to job listings, and a question and answer discussion forum. It a good place to start if you are thinking about coming to Japan. If you have specific questions, you can post them on the discussion forum. (It's probably much better than asking me.)
- For jobs at the college/university level in Japan, check out the web page of JACET(Japan Association of College English Teachers). Some of the listings are in English, some in Japanese, and some in both, and there are both part-time and full-time jobs.
- Another source for job information in English is the job listing of The Language Teacher, a publication of the Japan Association of Language Teachers.
- Ohayo
Sensei -- This is a good English listing of
jobs in Japan. It has some university level jobs, as well as language school listings and URLS
for information about Japan. Ask to have a copy e-mailed to you, or
subscribe to the mailing list.
- Japan Research Career Information Network--this web site has information on university and government research and teaching jobs in Japan. It's in Japanese only, but it's probably the best source for finding out about permanent (tenured) university jobs.
- LINGUIST
LIST Jobs listings-- Jobs for linguists and applied linguists
around
the world, including a surprising number of jobs in Japan.
- The English Resource Bookstore has information about teaching in Japan, as well as job listings (in particular, for language schools) and a place to post your resume. Of course, you can also order books from their web site.
- ESL
Job Listings from Dave's ESL Cafe: jobs in Japan and other Asian
countries
- 121 Sensei is a service where you can register to find students to teach privately. It also has a lot of good information about living and working in Japan.
- ELT News has job
listings and a lot of useful information about working in Japan.
- TEFL.NET has listings of jobs around the world, including Japan.
- Jobs at Waseda: Each school and institute within the university has its own way of recruiting new staff. To find out about job openings in some schools, it is almost necessary to have a personal connection, while others conduct public searches. Any full-time jobs that are being filled by a public search will be listed on the Japan Research Career Information Network page. To find out about part-time jobs not listed there, you might want to contact particular schools and institutes within the university directly to inquire about openings. But please don't send me e-mail asking about jobs at Waseda! When there are part-time openings, they are generally filled by personal recommendation, and I can't recommend anyone I don't know. Even if I wanted to, if I don't know you well I could not answer the kinds of questions I would be asked about you!
- Shoji Sugita's Home
Page has information on corporal punishment, teacher dismissals,
and more.
