In this part of the movie, the Philadelphia police officer John Book has
come to the Amish town to hide from the corrupt police officers who are
trying to kill him. He also wants to warn them that Samuel may be in danger. He has been shot, so the Amish put him to bed in
Rachel's house, where he sleeps for a few days. In the first scene we'll watch today, we'll see one of the corrupt policemen calling the police in Lancaster County to try and find Rachel. In the next scene, we'll see what happens when John wakes up
As you watch these scenes, look for
answers to the following questions:
- Who are the men who are standing by John's bed when he wakes up?
- Rachel says that she thinks Stoltzfas saved John' life, and Stolzfas says "No, that was not I." What does he mean?
- Why do the Amish object to guns?
- Why did Rachel give John her husband's clothes to wear? (She mentions a few reasons.)
- Why do Amish people use hooks and eyes instead of buttons?
- What are some of the "modern conveniences" that Amish people don't
have? Why don't they have them?
- What does Rachel say about tourists?
- Why does Rachel laugh at John when he comes in dressed in Amish
clothes?
