If you want to work at Waseda...
...please don't send me e-mail!
Waseda is a big university, and each of the schools and programs within the university recruit and hire teachers in their own way. I work the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS), so I only know about conditions there. I can't advise about other places in the university.
However, I can give some general advice:
- Some openings are announced publicly, while others are not. It depends on the particular school or programs. Some decide to recruit only in Japan, some recruit abroad as well, and some fill positions by asking faculty members to personally recruit and recommend candidates for a particular position. The School of Law (where I used to teach) for example, uses different methods depending on the position.
- You can find announcements for full-time positions at Waseda and other Japanese universities at http://jrecin.jst.go.jp/. While a few advertisements are in English as well as Japanese, for most of them you'll need to know Japanese in order to use the search engine. That's because they expect you to know Japanese in order to apply for the job. Typing in keywords like
英語, 英文学, and 言語学 should bring up a listing of English teaching jobs. All the full-time positions at the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS) are listed there.
- Some of the schools at Waseda also have information about openings on their web pages. The SILS homepage, for example, lists full-time positions for faculty and research assistants.
- If a Waseda job opening is not listed at the JRECIN site or on the school's web sote., then it will be filled by recommendation. At SILS, some part-time positions are filled this way. However, I can only recommend someone I know personally, so please don't send me any e-mail asking if there are any openings like this.
- As far as I know, there is no internet listing for part-time positions at Waseda. If you are already living in the Tokyo area and are interested in working part-time at a particular school or program at Waseda, it is probably best to contact the department directly to ask about openings, or you may try sending your CV along with a cover letter. (I know at least one person who succeeded at getting a part-time position at Waseda that way, but in other cases, it might just end up in the wastebasket.) The Waseda home page has links to the various schools and programs in the university Some have English home pages and some do not, but all have either a postal or e-mail address for the school or program.
Finally, you might be interested in one of the positions available through Waseda University International. WUI is a kind of public-private joint venture; WUI teaches many language classes for the various schools of Waseda on a contract basis. They recruit several few times a year for teachers for various type sof teaching jobs. Check their web page for more details.
For part-time positions or non-university positions (as well as for full-time positions outside of Waseda), you can try this list of internet sources for English teaching jobs in Japan.
Good luck!
