ジョン・ミルトン(Milton, John, 1608-74)
 イギリス17世紀の詩人、ケンブリッジ大学卒業後、ラテン語詩を得意として詩の修行を行う。1638-39年にイタリアに旅行。1642年に始まる清教徒革命で共和国を擁護する論陣を張り、政治パンフレット(The doctrine and discipline of divorce, printed by Thomas Payne and Matthew Simmons, 1643)や出版の自由を訴えた『アレオパジティカAreopagitica; a speech of Mr. John Milton for the liberty of vnlicenc’d printing to the Parlament of England』(London, Printed in the Yeare, 1644)を執筆。1645年に処女詩集『英語とラテン語による詩集Poems of Mr. John Milton, both English and Latin, compos’d at several times』(Ruth Raworth for Humphrey Moseley. octavo)刊行。クロムウェル(Cromwell, Oliver, 1599-1659)のラテン語秘書官を務めるが1652年に失明。
1660年の王政復古後は隠棲して詩作に励み、1666年9月のロンドン大火後の1667年に口述筆記による叙事詩『失楽園』(Paradise lost: a poem written in ten books)を刊行。原稿、印刷、校正には友人たちが協力した。印刷はシモンズ母子(Simmons, Mary and Samuel)、販売はパーカー(Peter Parker)が担当。初版初刷には前書きなし。売れ行きがよく、同年にタイトルページを変えて第2発行。翌年にもタイトルページを変えて2回発行。第4発行から例言(The Printer to the Reader)、梗概(Argument)、詩形論(The Verse)、正誤表(Errata)を追加。1669年にさらにタイトルページを変えて2回発行。本文は1667年に大量に印刷したものが使われた。印刷者はサミュエル・シモンズ(Samuel Simmons, -1687)は、ミルトンの初期の政治パンフレットを印刷したマシュー・シモンズ(Matthew Simmons, -1654)の息子で、マシューの死後、母メアリー(Mary Simmons, -1687)と共に印刷所を経営した。印刷所はCity の外側にあったためロンドン大火で被災しなかった。『失楽園』の印税は初版5ポンド、版を重ねるごとに1300部発行で5ポンドの印税を支払う契約であった。そのため、版を改めることなく1669年までにタイトルページを差し替えて初版1300~1500部を売った。価格3シリング。初版の印税は1667年8月20日にStationers’ Hallに登録されてから20か月後の1669年4月26日に支払われた。ミルトン死後の1680年に『失楽園』の版権がJacob Tonsonに売却され、ミルトンの遺族に8ポンドが支払われた。
