Overview

About Xover Projects and Xover-Houses

Generally, it is impossible that a house in a country is built by the existing production system in other countries, because the module of standard materials often varies from country to country. However, we have found a common module for Finnish and Japanese housing production systems. It is a size of 1200 x 2400 mm, which is called 4 x 8 size in Japan and standard size in Finland.
We use the discovery for the Xover Project and design a house. The “Xover Projects” is a trial to design “obscure objects” which crossovers 1. National borders and nationalities, 2. Space modules, 3. Functions and 4. Technologies. By the scales, they are separated to Xover Architecture, Xover House, and Xover products.
The “Xover Houses” is a housing series made up of four main crossovers . The crossovers are below.
1. The countries and the nationalities of t he designers.
2. Building material modules.
3. Units different from building materials such as columns and beams.
4. Technologies beyond the fields and the craftsmen.
The supporters are Aalto University, Alvar Aalto Foundation, Embassy of Japan in Finland, Embassy of Finland in Japan, Japan Finland Design Association, and Finland Design Centre.

Our Purpose

In collaboration with designers, real estate agents (house developers), and contractors from both Japan and Finland, we will develop a series of low-volume housing. Specifically, we will devise a house with semi-prefabricated and semi-free construction for about 200 to 400 thousand euros per house.
Henceforth, detached houses and multi-dwelling units of the developed housing estate in Finland and Japan will be in demand. This project creates such a new market. Cottages in campsites, clubhouses in marinas, and sauna facilities are also included in the market.

Design

Space of 13℃

In Xover Houses, the specific target of Xover is the design of indoor and outdoor temperature. By designing a region of 13 °C between 0 °C (outdoor) and 24 °C (indoor), Xover Houses are intended to emerge. The figure illustrates this idea.

Today's urban housing, including Japan, is trying to level the indoor temperature in search of the average comfort of its living environment. On the other hand, many Finnish homes try to go out and live with nature as much as possible in the change of outside temperature from -20 ℃ to + 25 ℃ throughout the year. This is brought about by how district heating creates an abundant intermediate area between the indoor space and the outside, which is constantly maintained at 24 ° C throughout the year.
Xover Houses pays attention to this point, and the core of the design is how to make 13 ℃ that can cross the climate of both Japan and Finland.
